Turada Hardwood Shingles

There are a number of appealing things about being a homeowner. At the same time, there are always frustrations and challenges. No matter how old your home is, there seems to always be an improvement or updating project going on. If you are the handy type, these projects can be enjoyable. On the other hand, if you don’t have renovation skills, these tasks can be a source of stress. Installing a new roof can be one of the most difficult projects. Fortunately, you have many options when it comes to materials. If you are interested in cedar shingles, use the following guidelines.

Different Treatments

As you begin to purchase these shingles, be aware that there are two different types of treatments: CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) or not CCA treated. These treatments will help keep moss, mildew and mold from growing on your shingles. It will also keep pesky insects at bay, thus protecting your shingles from deterioration and extending its life. It’s important to note, however, that CCA is not a fire protectant.

Different Grades and Thickness

Of all the types of shingles one can choose for a roof, homeowners like cedar shingles because of the many types and styles available. Included in this breadth of selection is the size of the shingle you can use. Some have 100 percent edge grain, while others have 20 percent. Thicknesses can also vary. Making these choices depends on your own style and choices.

Label Grades

Cedar shakes and shingles made of cedar come in four different grades: Blue Label, Black Label, Red Label and Undercoursing. Each has its uses and strengths. Blue Label, for example, has 100 percent edge grain, free of defects. It also has 100 percent heartwood.

Before you purchase your cedar shingles, be aware of your options. Cedar will allow you to meet all of your expectations and fulfill your wants with your roof.
